Book Recommendation: Heaven Without Her

Last Wednesday I had the privilege of having lunch with a local author and elite copywriter, Kitty Foth-Regner. Soon after I moved to the area a few years ago, I met Kitty at church. She invited me to lunch back then, but our schedules never seemed to mesh. When she saw my updated profile on linkedin.com regarding my entry into full-time freelance work, she sent me an encouraging note and once again invited me to join her for lunch. [For those in the Milwaukee area, let me just insert here quickly that Jack’s Cafe in Waukesha is an amazing place to eat, talk and  relax!]

I will tell you more of this dear woman at a later date. Her encouragement and desire to mentor me in this time of transition were a God-send, and I will always be grateful for her impact on my life in just those few short hours…though I truly hope they were only the first of many hours of fellowship yet to come!

But today I just want to recommend to you one of the books she wrote. I read it a little over a year ago and found myself moved, stirred, ashamed for my lack of seeking after things of God and changed for having read it. After seeing firsthand the changes God brought about in Kitty’s life, I was reminded to place this book on my must-read and must-recommend list.

Amazon’s book description of Heaven Without Her: A Desperate Daughter’s Search for the Heart of Her Mother’s Faith summarizes the book this way:

“Kitty Foth-Regner was a secular feminist who had bought hook, line, and sinker the ideals and objectives of Betty Friedan’s N.O.W. [National Organization for Women]. Kitty’s mother-a woman of faith-became sick and clearly was destined to die rather quickly. And the author began to wonder about whether she would be in heaven with her mother someday. This led her on a personal journey of faith. Heaven Without Her is Foth-Regner’s personal memoir of how she found, to her amazement, that all the evidence points to Christianity.”

The timeline-format in which this true story is presented engaged me from the start. Kitty’s forthright and honest telling of her prior disdain for things of the Lord and His people opened my eyes to the thought processes of a hardened and unbelieving heart. It further stirred in me the need to KNOW what I believe and to rely upon God’s Word for WHY I believe it. It’s a deep read—in that it’s not a bunch of fluff—but because of her engaging and transparent writing style, it’s not a difficult read. In fact, it’s one I had a hard time putting down between chapters!

I sincerely and strongly encourage you to get a copy of this book! (It is also available for Kindle.)

It really is a must-read!

My husband purchased this book for me after seeing it recommended on Grace Books International a couple of years ago. I agree this is an excellent book. It was an encouragement to me to never give up on people and remember that God is always in control!
