A Place of Quiet Rest – the perfect book to read on the balcony (my geographical “place of quiet rest”) this morning!
The other day, on “National Grilled Cheese Day” (Yes, there really is such a thing, and I wholeheartedly agree that there should be a day of celebration for such a national treasure as this!), a friend suggested I insert bacon into the sandwich for an extra-special treat! So this morning I was pondering what to have for a mid-morning brunch on the balcony and could think of nothing other than grilled cheese with bacon . . . and a baked apple. “Yummy” is an understatement! Top that off with freshly-ground coffee, and it will make your mouth smile, your tummy smile, and your spirit smile! 🙂
I am currently re-reading Nancy Leigh DeMoss’s book A Place of Quiet Rest: Finding Intimacy with God Through a Daily Devotional Life, and found my brunch and the book to be the perfect combination for a great start to the remainder of my day. If you haven’t read it, I’d strongly encourage you to take the time to do so. (And yes, the book is also available on Kindle!) One of the things I’ve always appreciated about her writing is her consistent reference to and foundation upon the Word of God. That’s a prerequisite for all my favorite “Christian living” authors, by the way.
With my growing to-do list at present, I felt almost a little guilty thinking that I was not going to conquer the world (or at least one room of packing, whichever came first!) before sunset tonight. Then I recalled my recent Scripture readings about the weeks prior to Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. He went to an olive grove at the base of the Mount of Olives – a beautiful, peaceful, God-created garden – to prepare His spirit for what was to come. It was the place where He could commune with His Father without earthly distractions, and His spirit was refreshed by it! In Luke 5:16 we are told that “Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.”
So I encourage you this weekend to take a few quiet moments to follow Christ’s example and find a quiet place to withdraw from distractions in order to refresh your body, mind, and spirit for the to-do lists ahead of you!
